Improved cycling links proposed for Mile Cross in Norwich

Norfolk County Council and the Transport for Norwich (TfN) partnership are asking for feedback on proposals to improve the Mile Cross Road and surrounding area so that more people choose to walk, wheel or cycle.

The proposed route would provide safe cycle access linking North Norwich with the Marriott’s Way, which provides direct traffic-free connections to the city centre and beyond.

Better facilities for those walking and wheeling (using wheelchairs or pushchairs) would also be provided and improved safety for all road users by reducing vehicle speeds on surrounding streets.

Two new zebra crossings would be provided and a proposed closure at one end of Half Mile Road would reduce through traffic in the area and improve the east/west neighbourhood cycling route between Margaret Paston Avenue and Half Mile Road.

Councillor Graham Plant, cabinet member for highways, infrastructure and transport, said: “Working with the city council Mile Cross Road was identified as a key location to improve cycle links and provide safe local access to the numerous schools and green spaces in the area, as well as better connections to the city centre for those living locally or commuting from further afield.

“We’d like anyone who lives in or travels by any mode through this part of Norwich to share their views. The feedback we receive will be carefully considered and provide valuable information as we shape the final proposed design for the project”.

Cllr Chrissie Rumsby, Norfolk County Council’s local representative for the area said: “I have long campaigned for safety improvements in Mile Cross and we finally have funding in place to deliver something. It is important that the community has its say on these proposals and I encourage everyone to take part.”

All information relating to the public consultation can be viewed at www.norfolk.gov.uk/milecross where there is also an online survey to complete.

Large copies of the plans are also available to view and takeaway at either the Phoenix Centre on Mile Cross Road or The Common Lot shop at the Drayton Road roundabout.

The deadline for responses is Sunday 20 October.

Improving cycling links between Mile Cross, Hellesdon and the city centre were identified as a priority in Norfolk County Council’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) for Greater Norwich (consulted on in July 2021) and this scheme is supported by Norwich City Council.

The work is estimated to cost £850,000 and would be funded by the Governments Active Travel Fund.
